We do have some history here, as we used to eat at Tofu House in Santa Clara at least once a week when we lived in Mountain View, though I hadn't seen the friendly owner in about 5 years. Apparently he remembers us as he immediately smiled when we entered...and then looked at me disparigingly, telling me I had gotten too skinny. Apparently he has also taken up new hobbies and fashioned himself a new sense of humor, because toward the end of the meal, he came over to the table, told me he would make me "something funny" and produced this balloon pig. Funny indeed. On the way out, he slipped me a pack of melon gum and told me to come back so he could fatten me up.
Our stomachs got us only as far as Santa Clara, so we are stopping for
soon-doo-boo at Tofu House.
I had been coveting the haupia pie at McDonald's (knowing full well
that it probably paled in comparison to the real thing but still
curious about the fact that it was one of the only foods served all
day). After a particularly disappointing Korean meal in Kihei, I
convinced the hubby to pull into the drive-thru for dessert. He became
noticeably uncomfortable as we pulled up to the menu, and finally
turned to me to ask "How do you pronounce it again?" So I reminded him
that usually vowels are annunciated separately, but in "haupia" the a
and u are sort of slurred together. Looking back, it appears I may
have over-complicated the issue because when posed with the question
"May I take your order?" he blurted out "I would like two HOWpia
pies." But no harm, no foul. They were awfully tasty and totally made
up for bad kalbi and neng myun.
Forget sandy beaches and incredible views. This is the home of loco
moco and kalua pig!!
Just to clarify, that's Arnie PALMER and yes, that's his Masters green jacket.
